City Description
Thirty years ago, Shenzhen was a fishing village of 30,000 inhabitants. Then Deng Xiaoping designated it as a Special Economic Zone and Shenzhen quickly grew into one of China’s most developed cities with its own stock exchange.

Today, Shenzhen is the 4th largest commercial metropolis in China. Situated in the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong Province, South China, Shenzhen is the 4th busiest container port in the world. Ranked 1st among China’s major cities for GDP per capita with over 9 million inhabitants, and growing.

In 2011, Shenzhen will be the youngest city to host the Summer Universiade Games. In 2014,Shenzhen will be home for the 646-meter tall Pingan International Finance Center, which will be the tallest building in China and second tallest building in the world.

Culture
A city without winter, Shenzhen is adjacent to Hong Kong in a sub-tropical zone climate. Cantonese is the locally spoken dialect, but 2/3 of Shenzhen’s residents are either a migrant worker from another province or an expatriate from another country, so English is popular. This large majority of non-native or “outsider” population brings their own fashion and cuisine, providing a wide variety to anyone living in or visiting Shenzhen. Most of the action happens in the four districts closest to Hong Kong

Yantian District is where you will find the 4th busiest container port in the world. Besides marveling at the number of ships that come in and out every day, you can vacation at beach resorts in Xiaomeisha or visit Daxiagu (Grand Canyon) in Dameisha.

Luohu District is the lively old town where natives like to eat, shop, and play. The world’s largest electronics market is found here at Huaqiang Bei. Luohu seems to never sleep, especially with the countless night markets and Hong Kong border crossing that is open until nearly 12 midnight.

Futian District is the Center Business District where commercial development and modern municipal infrastructure has attracted many expatriates to live and work. At the top of Lianhua Shan Park in the north, a statue honoring Deng Xiaoping is one of the best vista points to overlook all of Shenzhen. Many Hong Kong-nese have a second home near the Futian Kou’an and Huanggang border crossings in the south.

Nanshan District is the rapidly developing part of Shenzhen with Hi-Tech Industry Park and Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE) fueling growth and attracting world-class talent. Its southwest corner is known as Shekou, or snake’s mouth, where foreigners enjoy western culture at Sea World, and where ferries from Shenzhen Port commute to Hong Kong and Macau.

Shenzhen is a city of compassion, deeply rooted in volunteerism. Newcomers can easily find help navigating the city or seek support with career or entrepreneurial opportunities.
