Peking University (PKU) Shenzhen 2015 Opening Ceremony unfolded with an international touch at the sports center gymnasium of Shenzhen University Town on Thursday morning.Sitting among the Chinese freshmen, 110 newly enrolled overseas students were dressed in matching white university T-shirts, with four red Chinese characters reading Peking University.

"I love Peking University. I love Nanyan," overseas students, from 38 countries and regions, yelled in Mandarin during the English-language ceremony. Nanyan refers to the campus of the PKU Shenzhen Graduate School. Made up of both full-time and exchange students, they are mainly pursuing degrees and courses at HSBC Business School (PHBS) and the School of Transnational Law (STL). One of them, Xavier Lemyre, a full-time Canadian PHBS student, served as one of the hosts Thursday. PKU Shenzhen Chancellor, Hai Wen, welcomed the students during his speech.
According to PKU Shenzhen's brochure, last year, the school had 60 foreign experts on staff, more than one-third of the full-time faculty.Lin Honghai, deputy director of the Education Administration Office, described PKU's collaboration with overseas universities.
"There are three levels of cooperation," said Lin. The first is the double-degree programs at university level, in total, around six to seven in number, and mainly offered by PHBS and a few science schools. The overseas collaborative sides encompass the Hong Kong University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the National University of Singapore and several universities in the U.S.
The second is exchange programs at school level, with the third being collaborative research programs between supervisors, who offer students research experiences in overseas labs.Lin said the eight schools launched at PKU Shenzhen Graduate School are also related to local industries. "STL is linked to the Qianhai free trade zone, where there will be a closer connection with foreign legal specialists."
Hai highlighted the 9.4 percent economic average growth rate of Shenzhen and its outstanding corporations like Huawei and Tencent. "Shenzhen is now a land of innovation and creation, as well as a center of finance and modern service," he concluded.But compared with its neighbors, Tsinghua University Shenzhen Graduate School and Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) Shenzhen Graduate School, Lin said, PKU Shenzhen looks more to national and international platforms, with a comprehensive curriculum.
HIT, he said, has taken up a localized strategy, with most of its students staying in Shenzhen after graduation, and a new campus for undergraduate students just being approved.This semester saw a registration of new students capped at 966, Hai said. "I hope you will always be able to maintain independent thinking, not blindly following the popular trends nor authority without careful consideration," Hai said.
