Definition of Residence Permit
The Chinese residence permits are the identification certificates, with which foreigners may reside legitimately in China for a long period of time. They can enter and leave China for multiple times within the valid term of their residence permits, with no restriction on the duration of stay each time (within the valid term).
The residence permit of work category for foreigners (commonly known as “work visa”) has various valid terms ranging from 90 days to 5 years, with the 1-year-term work permit being most popularly used. The residence permit of non-work category has various valid terms ranging from 180 days to 5 years, with the 1-year-term work permit being most popularly used. The residence permit can be renewed upon expiry, as a 1-year-term residence permit may get renewed for a 1-year term.
Application Conditions
The people from outside the Chinese territory (including the foreigners and the citizens of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) who apply for long-tem residence permits must meet the basic conditions listed below：
Be 18 years of age minimum
Be physically healthy (as evidenced by his/her check-up certificate)
Education certificate
Have the expertise and working experience as required of the post he/she is to take
Have no criminal record
Have a definite employer or certificate of investment in China (e.g. the business license of a company registered in China)
Hold a valid passport or any other international travel certificate
Other documents to be submitted as required
