Beijing thrives today as the political and cultural capital of China as well as a center of international activity and an important socialist base.

Great changes have taken place since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The city walls were demolished to facilitate transportation and allow for general expansion. By 2007, the population exceeded 16.33 million. The city is presently divided into 16 districts: Dongcheng, Xicheng, Chongwen, Xuanwu, Chaoyang, Haidian, Shijingshan, Fengtai, Shunyi, Changping, Mentougou, Tongzhou, Fangshan, Daxing, Huairou and Pinggu. In addition to these urban districts, the municipality is comprised of two counties: Miyun and Yanqing.

Beijing has been planed upon the principle of “Two Axes, Two Belts, and Multi-Centers.”Two Axes: East-west axis along Changan Avenue and the historical north-south axis. Two Belts: Eastern Development Belt includes Huairou, Miyun, Shunyi, Tongzhou, Yizhuang and Pinggu; Western Development Belt includes Yanqing, Changping, Mentougou, Fangshan and Daxing.

Multi-Centres: Various functional centers will be established in the urban area in order to enhance the city’s core functions of service and overall competitiveness in both domestic and world markets. They include Zhongguancun Science Park, Olympic Games Area, Central Business District (CBD), Haidian Shanhou Scientific Innovation Park, Shunyi Modern Manufacturing Centre, Tongzhou Comprehensive Service Centre, Yizhuang Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, and Shijingshan Comprehensive Service Centre.

The rapid development of Beijing’s road network has benefited everyone in the city, but especially residents who drive private cars. Now there are more than 20,000 kilometres of roadways in Beijing and the density of its roads is now 125 km/hundred sq.km. In the year of 2007, Beijing added 82 km more length to its expressways in 2007, bringing the network’s total mileage to more than 628 km. With the newly built expressways, Beijing residents should be able to reach any new towns from Central Beijing within an hour.

Beijing’s subway system was improved and expanded in 2007. Line 5 was completed and put into use on October 7. There were five lines in operation at the end of 2007,with a total length of 142 kilometres. Ten projects with a total length of 270 km are being added. By 2015, Beijing will have 19 rail lines, forming a network of “three ring lines, four transverse lines, five vertical lines and 7 radiating lines,” offering a total length of 561 km of service and serving 9 million passengers a day.

With Tian'anmen at the center, offices along 38-kilometer-long Chang'an Boulevard will concentrate on state, political and economic affairs. The areas around the Palace Museum (Imperial Palace or Forbidden City) and city gates as well as the lakes -- Zhongnanhai, Beihai and Housanhai -- have been designated landmark districts. And with a look to the future, an increasing number of historical, cultural and revolutionary sites are being renovated and opened to the public.
