ATAHK reads from Xinhua English that Hong Kong on Monday held a Seminar on the Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific Region -- Maintaining Stable and Sustainable Growth, discussing Hong Kong's contribution to the growth of the regional trade.

The Joint Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (HKCPEC)-China National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (CNCPEC) Seminar provides a platform for representatives from the academic, business and government sectors to examine how to promote and inject new impetus for growth through cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. Nicholas Kwan, director of research from the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, said one of the major challenges for Hong Kong is that there existed an obvious anti-globalization trade worldwide since 2008. Acting as a free economy system, Hong Kong has been always supporting the development of global trade. Hong Kong should contribute more to regional economic agreements, making efforts to improve agreements more comprehensive and inclusive.

"We see a growing number of services trade is not only in the general business services, but in some of the traditional public services, including housing, health care and education. In fact, I believe that Hong Kong has many business opportunities in these sectors," Kwan added.

Stephen Cheung, chairman of the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation, said that the role of Small and Medium enterprises (SMEs ) in the Asia-Pacific region are very critical to the region's economic development. "If the growth of SMEs shows a down trend, there would be a great impact to the job market," He said.

Cheung said the SMEs should cooperate between different Asian economies. "If we have the chance to expand their market and increase the materials market needs, if they can maintain a relatively stable growth, the SMEs will continuously make contributions to our job market."
