SHANGHAI is putting more emphasis on medical education and has chalked out plans to have 80,000 students doing medicine by 2030.
There were 23,259 medical undergraduates and postgraduates in local universities in 2014, according to statistics made available by the city’s education commission.

As per a development plan released yesterday, the government will financially support top medical universities in the city to enroll more students to meet the city’s needs for medical professionals. Local medical schools have been told to focus on general practitioners and rehabilitation physicians, which are facing severe shortages now, Vice Mayor Wen Tiehui said in a press conference yesterday.
Art students will also get a boost in the new higher education plan as Shanghai aims to become an international metropolis of artistic education.
