A survey has found Chinese hold mixed attitudes towards children's use of social media tools, with 28.7 percent of those polled voicing support for it and 36.6 percent against it.

Some 81.4 percent of 2,001 respondents nationwide polled by the China Youth Daily said there are many children around them who use social media, the newspaper reported on Friday.

Among the most popular tools used by the children are instant messaging apps WeChat and QQ, while some of them are also using Twitter-like microblogging or video-sharing websites, as well as web forums.

Things attracting most attention among the children include information on entertainment and celebrities, online games, the daily lives of their relatives and classmates, and information involving their courses at school, according to the respondents.

More than 73 percent of the respondents said many parents around them were fond of "showing off" their children by posting pictures and stories online.

But 36.6 percent of them voiced opposition to such practices on the grounds that such information could be misused by malicious people.
