Shipbuilders sign French deal for 22 vessels

Three major Chinese shipbuilding groups signed a contract recently to build nine 22,000 TEU container ships for French shipping company CMA-CGM.

The trio involved in the deal were Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co Ltd (SWS), Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co Ltd, and China State Shipbuilding Company.

The ships will be designed by the 708 Research Institute affiliated to China State Shipbuilding Company and will be built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co Ltd.The vessels will be powered by engines designed by Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding.

The 22,000-TEU vessels will be the largest container ships in the world. The order reflects the competitiveness and the global leading position of Chinese shipbuilders.
