The phase-four project of the Shanghai International Shipping Service Center Yangshan Deep-water Port was completed recently, following an appraisal by the Shanghai Transportation Commission. With the completion, the port’s berthing capacity reached 150,000 tons.
The port began operation and production in October 2017 and has handled 600 main-route vessels and 3,200 sub-route vessels so far. It is estimated that the port will have handled 2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2018.
During the trial production period, the port’s 16 travelling cranes, 88 rail-mounted gantry cranes, and 80 automated guided vehicles have been put into use. It has also been updating its production management functions and equipment. The port’s daily throughput reached 14,451TEUs.
Also, the equipment of the phase-four project of the port weathered a number of typhoons in the summer and autumn of 2018.
Construction for the 2.23-million-square-meter phase-four project of the port began in December 2014. It has seven planned berths and the length of the container terminal’s coast is 2,350 meters, making it the largest automated container port in the world.
The completion of the phase-four project marks the beginning of the port’s production. The port plans to expand its equipment to 26 travelling cranes, 120 rail-mounted gantry cranes, and 130 automated guided vehicles, capable of handling 6.3 million TEUs a year.
