ATAHK reads from Xinhua News that Czech Airlines (CSA) has informed the Employment Office that it will fire 77 pilots and more than 200 cabin crew members and other staff, cutting one-third of its staff. For details, please refer to the following news from Xinhua News on September 24th:
Stanislav Fiala, the president of the Czech Air Line Pilots Association (CZAPLA), said Wednesday that an official statement will probably be released on Thursday.
CSA spokesman Daniel Sabik said that the airlines is trying to find new jobs for some of the professions in cooperation with partners from the SkyTeam alliance.
The lay-offs are a necessary reaction to the removal of the A320 planes from CSA's fleet. Adjustment of the fleet is part of efforts to secure sustainable operating profit for CSA, said Sabik.
He said the lay-offs will involve some 70 pilots, 150 flight attendants and some 60 administrative staff.
"Korean Air and Aeroflot, for example, may employ most Airbus A320 pilots for whom CSA will no longer have work," said Sabik.
"The decision that CSA will no longer use the Airbus A320 planes was discussed and unanimously approved by all CSA shareholders at the company's general meeting in early September as part of the restructuring plan," he said.
"The company has decided to accelerate this step after it had recorded a significant annual drop in the number of reservations and passengers from the Russian Federation and other countries of the former Soviet Union in connection with the crisis in Ukraine," said the spokesman.
CSA had recently great economic difficulties which led to the sale of a large part of its shares to South Korean airline Korean Air in 2013. It had 50 planes in its fleet and employed about 3,300 staff in 2010.
