In its age-old history, Yiwu martial arts have seen generations of great figures. Traced back to the ancient times, in the Three Kingdoms period, Luo Tong, who protected the frontier and defeated the Wei troops, was conferred the Left General by Emperor Sun Quan of Wu. In the Tang Dynasty, Luo Binwang made his name by his “Official Denunciation of Wu Zetian”. In the Song Dynasty, Zong Ze was a famous general against the Jin invaders. In the Ming Dynasty, famous masters of martial arts included the generals against the Japanese pirates such as Chen Dacheng, Wang Rulong and Zhu Wenda as well as Huanghuang Boxing coach Jin Tai. There were 228 Yiwu people who had been conferred such military titles as marshal, general, garrison commander, vice garrison commander, bazong (company officer), and qianhu (officer commanding one thousand soldiers). In the modern times, Wu Langkun, the bodyguard of Wu Shanmin, was famous for his skills in performing axe and sword. Wang Boxiong, a martial arts master, had studied in Shanghai Martial Arts School and worked as secretary for Yang Dengpu. Other famous figures include Huang Changlu, famous for soldierly virtues; Zhu Dede, advocator of “Ten Dos” and “Ten Don’ts” in the teaching of martial arts; and Shen Binyi, who started to practice martial arts in his childhood and became a general later. As the saying goes, “Lanxi has wharf, Xiaoshan has Butou, and Yiwu has martial artists”. In addition to the various types of martial arts, Yiwu also has its unique activities such as stone seat lifting, dragon dances, lion dances, gallop, Shizilianhua, stilts-walking, bullfight, Luohanban and Sanche. Every village has its own strengths: Niansanli in Dongxiang is known for the forceful boxing; Wudian and Yiting in Xixiang are more practical; Suxi and Xinting in Beixiang combine strength and grace; and Fotang in Nanxiang boasts its graceful posture. On holidays, Luohanban and martial arts teams go among different parts of the countryside. The mass-based Yiwu martial arts uphold the spirit of righteousness and braveness, and Yiwu martial arts circles emphasize loyalty, justice, fairness and soldierly virtues.

Yiwu’s Party Committee and Government have always laid emphasis on martial arts activities, and the relevant Sports Administrative Department has regarded the martial arts as the representative project of the mass sports activity. Yiwu Martial Arts Association, established in November 1984, had the government officials serving as honorary chairmen in the seven terms of office. Core members of martial arts are selected into the Association from various departments and villages, making it the largest and the most developed mass organization with the most excellent work and frequent activities. Yiwu has won the first or the second places for many years in the regional or provincial martial arts contests. Yiwu Martial Arts (Boxing) Team, representing Zhejiang Province, has also achieved great results in the national competition. In January 2003, the Team joined in an international competition in Hong Kong, winning 4 gold medals and 2 bronze medals. Yiwu Martial Arts Association has been repeatedly awarded the title of Advanced Unit by the national-level, regional and provincial sports departments. In 1986, Director Wu Dongming of Yiwu Culture and Education Bureau attended in Beijing the National Conference of Advanced Sports Work. In 1987, Deputy Secretary Hong Chengfang of Yiwu Party Committee attended the National Conference of Advanced Sports County in Beijing. In 1988, Jing Weiqin, Vice Mayor of Yiwu, attended the Awarding Ceremony of Advanced Sports County in Beijing. In 2002, Vice Mayor Luo Gen and Director Jin Laixing of the Sport Bureau attended the Awarding ceremony of ‘Home of Martial Arts’ in Sichuan, where Yiwu became a member of ‘Home of Martial Arts’.

Yiwu Martial Arts Association has a branch in Fotang, and has in addition established several sub-structures including Tajiquan (shadowboxing) Association, Boxing Association, Wrestling Association, Qigong (breathing exercises) Association, and Mulan Boxing Association, which aim at promoting the Chinese martial arts by uniting the martial arts enthusiasts and activists in different areas, streamlining the traditional sports culture and training a number of key martial arts players. All these have contributed to the development of the martial arts, a favorite sport for the locals, whose daily practice has become a unique scene of the city.
