Wu Opera, originated in the middle and the late period of the Ming Dynasty, is one of the major types of drama in Zhejiang Province, with a history of more than 400 years. Based in the Jinhua region, Wu Opera is popular in places such as Jinhua, Lishui, Linhai, Jiande, and Chun’an as well as Yushan, Shangrao, Guixi, Boyang and Jingdezhen in the northeastern part of Jiangxi Province. The opera features six operatic tunes: high-pitched melody, Kunqu Opera melody, Luantan (Chinese Opera melodies other than Kunqu and high-pitched melodies), Anhui Opera melody, Tanhuang (storytelling in rhymes) melody and Shidiao (popular songs) melody.
Wu Opera is traditionally known as Jinhua Opera because JinHua used to be called Wuzhou in ancient times, maintaining the present name of Wu Opera since 1949. The Yiwu Wu Opera Troupe, the former Xueyue Stage, was founded in 1955, and is the only professional non-governmental troupe in Yiwu, with a staff of 55, including 4 with senior professional titles, 19 with intermediate professional titles and 14 with primary professional titles. It gives around 200 performances every year, and also cooperates with the Yiwu Municipal Party Committee and the Yiwu People’s Government in preparing programs and performing for propaganda and important activities in Yiwu. It ranked the “Advanced Unit for Performance in Countryside” of Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture, won the collective rewards twice by the Yiwu Government, and was awarded the title of ‘Advanced Propaganda Unit’ for many times by the Publicity Department of Jinhua Municipal Party Committee and the counterpart of Yiwu.
The Troupe has created dramas to publicize Yiwu, including “Hero’s Tears”, “A Stubborn Person”, “Legend of Zhu Yitie”, “Trade Candy with Chicken Feathers”, “Yiwu Soldiers”. The Troupe has also won dozens of prizes including the “Excellent Performance and Excellent Drama” prize in the provincial selection of local operas as well as the “Five Ones” project award by the Propaganda Department of CPC Zhejiang Provincial Committee. Their repertoire consists of 20 dramas including “Story of the Premier”, “Lubu and Diaochan”, “Lu Wenlong”, “Yanzhou Battle”, “Grievance of Two Ladies”, “Wrongly-Tied Red Ribbon”, “Story of Huamei”, “Prince Anle” as well as 20 operettas including “Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea”, “Meeting across the River”, “Persuade Wife”, and “Destiny in the Closet”. Moreover, 20 dramas including “Yiwu Soldiers”, “Meeting across the River”, “Nine Clothes”, “Torture in the Prison”, “Beheading of Lubu” and “Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea”, have been selected to show on CCTV and Zhejiang TV.
